Your baby deserves to have healthy gums and healthy teeth. But, that health doesn’t just happen naturally. There are things you need to do to keep your baby’s smile in tip-top shape. To help you know how to care for and clean your baby’s mouth, our pediatric dentists, Drs. Morgan, Allman, and Compton, have some helpful tips for you. Those tips are:

-Clean the gums when they don’t have teeth yet. All you need to do is take a clean, wet washcloth and wipe the gums after each feeding. Doing so can wash the harmful bacteria away and help your child maintain a top-notch oral health.

-Clean the teeth when they start growing into place. To do so, use a child-sized, soft-bristled toothbrush and non-fluoridated and safe-to-swallow toothpaste. If you would rather not use toothpaste, you can just use water. Because your baby’s teeth aren’t tightly knit together yet, you don’t need to worry about flossing until they get older.

-Bring them in for their first checkup at an early age. In fact, it’s recommended to bring them to their first appointment by the time they are one year old or six months after their first tooth erupted. This appointment can help you know all about properly caring for your baby’s smile.
